Scrutineering Guidelines |
Please read this document carefully, preferably several times. Check and determine what is allowed in the way of modifications to your car for the class you are entering to avoid disappointment and problems near event time.
When in doubt contact our Technical Office by email: tech@targanewfoundland.com
| ITEM | INFO |
| TIRES | Targa Newfoundland only allows 6 tires to be used without incurring a penalty. These six tires will be inspected and marked during Scrutineering. You may carry these tires in or on your car. You may also have your service crew carry your spares. Think about having your service crew carry the spares. We have had cases where a competitor damaged two tires in one stage. Tires used must never have a tread depth less than 2/32’’ during the course of the event. The complete manufacturer’s name, tire model, size, speed rating, or load carrying capacity must be moulded on the sidewall. DOT approval is also required. [Tires from outside North America may be allowed please check regulations] You will encounter all kinds of weather and road conditions during Targa. Please choose tires wisely. |
HELMETS |
You must use an approved helmet. The most commonly used in North America are Snell SA 2000 or SA 2005 No other Snell helmets are approved in Targa class
Helmets bearing SFI or BSI stickers may also be approved. Check the rule book. |
SEAT BELTS / SAFETY HARNESSES |
Only belts with a Turnbuckle or Push button release are permitted. Lever action [often called Duckbill] is not permissible. Belts must be in good condition and no older that 5 years old. Check regulations regarding installation. |
FIRE EXTINGUISHERS |
You are required to have one 10BC or two 5BC units or one 5BC with an on board fire suppression system. One unit must be within reach of both crew members. The Extinguishers must be attached with Metal-to-Metal fittings. You don’t want fitting to break while driving. We will also be checking that extinguisher is new or has been serviced within the past two years. Note: the 5 BC is not necessarily a 5Lb unit. The 5BC refers to how much fire can be knocked down with the amount of chemical in the extinguisher. |
DRIVING SUITS |
Crew members are required to wear Driving suits. Suits must meet either FIA or, as a minimum, SFI 3-2A/1. Another very important thing to consider it identifies you to the many Targa fans you will meet as a Competitor. |
TRIANGLES |
You are required to have 3 Safety triangles. These must be self supporting with a minimum of 30cms per side [that’s 12 inches for those who don’t think in Metric] Please mark car number or drivers name on them. Make sure that one can be easily reached by either crew member. You should make sure you can set it up with-out reading an instruction manual. Remember the car behind started 30 seconds after you. |
FIRST AID KIT |
One item we hope you never need for yourself or someone else. You are required to have a comprehensive first aid kit. One of the best ones in Canada is sold by St John Ambulance. |
TOWING POINTS |
Many cars competing in Targa have unique requirements for towing. Ideally you should have a tow hook or loop mounted front and rear, these should be identified. We have a great Tow crew at Targa but if you are not available and car needs to be extracted from a situation we need to know tow locations. You will also need a Tow Strap or Rope. |
ROLL CAGES |
We hope this is one item on your car that is never tested. Targa regulations have been written to give you a guide to Roll-cage design and construction. This is not a place to save money have your cage built by an experienced cage builder. Contact us with any questions. We have had entrants who needed to have cage rebuilt in St John’s before being allowed to run. That places an enormous amount of stress on everyone. |
CREWS' NAMES |
We require that Crews names and Country flags be displayed on cars. Easy item - have it done before the event. |
LIGHTS / ELECTRICS |
All lights including brake and signals must be operating. Check your horns and wipers. Remember you must be able to signal another car with your lights when overtaking. Flip up lights don’t work very well for this. |
GENERAL SAFETY |
You should check you car for dripping fluids, condition of belts, all suspension components, condition of glass [no cracked windshields] Consider that your car is going to undertake a vehicle safety inspection in your Province or State and prepare accordingly. |
SCRUTINEERING DAY |
Saturday in St John’s will be extremely busy you do not want to be repairing your car or going to a store to get needed items. The Boy Scouts have a saying ‘Be Prepared’ it also applies at Targa. Once registered apply your required sponsor decals as soon as possible. [Remember ‘Be prepared’ have soapy water or window wash in a spray bottle and a plastic scraper for application-credit cards work but you may need them] You will have meetings to attend, try and have one of your crew stay with the car. Make sure Driving suits, helmets and tires are all with the car and not back at the hotel. Helmets with SA stickers make sure you know location of sticker. Under the lining but location differs with each maker. |
The Scrutineering Team wants your
Tech inspection to go as SMOOTHLY as possible.
Your Preparation will help make this happen.
