Bankers race lawyers for cancer research

For seven days this September, two two-man teams will race 2,200 km across Newfoundland in rally cars to raise money for pediatric cancer research. Now that's making charity fun.

The race is Targa Newfoundland and the four participants are: Rob Hansen, Dean Novak, Brent Layton and Gabriel Riff. Mr. Hansen and Mr. Novak, the lawers, work for McCarthy Tétrault LLP and Siemens Canada Limited, while bankers Mr. Layton and Mr. Riff work for Canaccord Genuity and hedge fund Goodwood Inc., respectively.

Donations will go to the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario and Young Adult Cancer Canada. Over $12,000 has been raised so far and the foursome has a $30,000 target in mind.

"The island of Newfoundland is the only place on the continent where this event could be held – where else could you close off 2200 kilometres of paved highway for flat out motoring competition?"
