Community Relations

Monday, Sept 15th (Img9196)

The entire Targa Newfoundland team – from our senior leadership to our incredible array of volunteers, host communities, corporate partners and visiting competitors shares a passion for community. In fact, that commitment to community and sense of collaboration is a reason many of our visitors return year after year.

Through our team efforts, Targa Newfoundland has been able to give back to the people & communities of Newfoundland in Labrador in a variety of ways. Since 2001, we've grown our annual direct & indirect benefit to the provincial economy from eight million dollars to over $16 million dollars in 2007. This financial gain is felt by many, especially small business owners in rural Newfoundland.

As our way of saying thanks to the five 'stages' that compose the Targa Newfoundland route, we offer a $1,000 annual bursary to one community and respective project in each area per year – totalling $5,000 per year. The funds from these bursaries are used towards capital investment, ensuring the growth and development of infrastructure in the wonderful places our volunteers and Targa fans call home. Whether it be enhancing a basketball court or upgrading a public library, we're thankful for our Targa communities and the people who make it happen!

As an international event, we're always pleased to note that our competitors are often raising funds and awareness of their own, individual charity of choice. Whether it is Multiple Sclerosis or a children's charity, our competitors share our desire to enhance the lives of others at home and abroad.

"The really interesting thing about Targa is that it has public and volunteer support like no event I've ever seen. I don't know that you could do this (Targa Newfoundland) in any other province! The folks in Newfoundland are generous and put up with the inconvenience of having their roads closed for several hours. Several thousand volunteers given their time, often their holidays, to allow us to do this… You rely on the volunteers to keep traffic out of the stage and keep people safe. We're very grateful to the folks that give their time (and roads to allow us to do this.) "
